There is no evidence vaccines cause ASD at this time.
But the cause of autism is not known to a medical/scientific certainty. It is believed to be both genetic and environmental in origin but no one knows for sure at this point.
I wouldn't call it a stupid debate, though. Because I have a number of parents of severely autistic children among my Facebook friends, I am very much aware of what their beliefs are. And it does matter. When you have a kid who is 12 hurts himself or others, or refuses to wear clothes in public, has to be sedated to get on an airplane, or whatever -- you are looking for someone to blame. So, you're angry about vaccines, you think GMOs are bad (even though they, TOO, are safe), you wonder what YOU did to deserve it, what YOU did wrong, etc. The reality is there are no answers.
So, when someone says, "We got it! It is vaccines!" then that's an answer you want to hear and want to hang on to. Right or wrong, I'm not going to argue about it, and I'm not going to tell the parent she's wrong.
If she gets a bit of peace from the belief, then I think she ought to keep on believing it. |
