If the raw data is bad, how can anyone possibly know how to correct it?

Unless you think the teach manipulating data to shape it to a desired target in universities now. I guess that's possible.

You say the raw data is no good, but that means you can't make it good by any legitimate statistical means. All you can do is manipulate to make it look like what you want it to look like and that's exactly what is happening and what you're defending.
