David, The product and technology are for real. My systems group has hundreds of Siebel users in production. If you believe in the potential of the marketplace for SFA/CIS systems, then Siebel's the real deal.

Personally, I'm not convinced that large, high-end SFA implementations have adequate ROIs to sustain Siebel's current margins. The hardware, software, imlplementation, etc required to make them work is really expensive. Nailing sales guys down to a standard sales process is another big hurdle. These types of systems projects are as risky as it gets.

As far as the company goes, its growing a lot. I can't say if the growth is being managed. I've hear Tom Siebel say many times that he's trying to build a great company. Yet at the same time you hear stories about how hard it is to work with the guy. I dunno.
