How do you know? How do you know it is 3 and not 30 or 300 or 3000?

We know there are people who are motivated to misstate the truth. What measures are in place to insure the proper calibration of equipment? What controls have been established to insure there are no intentional misstatements? What measures are taken to insure against systematic measurement failures? How can the consistency of measurements taken over extended periods of time be guaranteed (after all, we're making claims based on 100ths of degrees, with tiny margins of error, and where the technology, like most technologies may evolve over time and in some locations). Are the standards rigorous and fail-safe, and are audits conducted to insure compliance?

Just wondering about all this, since you seem to be the font of knowledge...
