It has been more than a decade, but I have been to Germany several times. A couple of times with a connecting flight through Heathrow. The only time I had my passport checked was upon return to the US.
There is no need for a passport in the Shengen area countries...Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Note that the UK is not part of this area. I suspect that we may see a revisit of this agreement considering the situation in Syria and Iraq and the recent French terrorist acts.
