There is no need for a passport in the Shengen area countries...Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
There certainly is a need if you are an American traveling to one of those countries from a Transatlantic flight. Residents of the Shegen area do not, but the old lines and signs are still present in the international terminals.
If you libs do NOT know the correct answers, perhaps keeping quiet is best.
Some countries don't care at all (Italy) and some do. Blanket statements as yours are usually wrong.
