Al, you and Wharf Rat don't get the implication of square footage.

I'm not concerned about land usage. We have a lot of land here.

I'm concerned about the cost of constructing many square miles of solar panels and the maintenance thereof. That's pretty significant.

If said costs made economic sense, you wouldn't have to subsidize solar power because private enterprise would be buying up land and building solar power plants like there's no tomorrow.

Right now, there's a lot of money in solar only because it's getting a LOT of money from government and from left-wing venture capitalists. For example, Apple just invested $850M into a solar power plant. Nothing wrong with that; if Tim Cook wants to toss what is essentially pocket change into saving the planet, he's free to do so.

But the truth is that solar isn't economically viable and probably won't be unless energy prices rise drastically.
