Like you point out they are stereotypes..........and there tend to be a lot of exceptions to stereotypes. I have a couple of friends who don't fit the stereotypes at all.
At my age, in the region I live in, and in the field of work I'm in, these stereotypes don't really matter all that much.

But it still affects Asian men, the notion that they are submissive and effeminate. This is true especially when they try to pick up non-Asian girls at the bar.

Have you seen that short-lived ABC sitcom Selfie? That show, among other things, tried to buck the stereotype by having John Cho (Harold and Kumar, Star Trek) as the male love interest.

Speaking of which, my brother-in-law is getting married to a white woman. Another example of the stereotype being dismantled. Go him.
