FRANK MCKENNA ON BOARD OF DIRECTORS

This speaks very, very highly of MDI - in addition to his personal talents, McKenna is a first-class guy.

MONCTON, N.B., Dec. 15 /CNW/ - Ronald J. Goguen, President and Chief
Executive Officer of Major Drilling Group International Inc., today announced
the appointment of Frank McKenna, former Premier of New Brunswick to the Board
of Directors.

''We are very pleased to welcome Mr. McKenna to our Board of Directors,''
said Mr. Goguen. ''Given his vast experience in successfully promoting New
Brunswick to markets around the globe, his keen business sense and his desire
to foster continued economic growth in this region, Mr. McKenna will be an
extremely valuable member of our board. His advice and counsel are in high
demand and we are delighted that he has accepted our offer.''

Mr. McKenna will work as a consultant on a number of special projects
including the world-wide promotion of the company's products and services and
the expansion of their international client base.

Mr. McKenna served as Premier of New Brunswick from October 1987 to
October 1997. A lawyer specializing in trial law, he was first elected to the
New Brunswick legislature in 1982 and became leader of the Liberal Party in
1985. His term as Premier was marked by the rejuvenation and diversification
of the New Brunswick economy, a much improved fiscal picture and considerable
gains in job creation.

Major Drilling is based in Moncton, New Brunswick and currently has 38
branches located in 21 countries throughout North, South and Central America,
as well as Turkey, Australia, Ghana and Indonesia. Its core business segment
is mineral exploration drilling world-wide. Major Drilling also conducts
environmental, geotechnical and directional drilling and manufactures drills
and support equipment through Universal Drilling Systems (UDR), a subsidiary
