>> Dude, so that we are on the same page here...both of these states are taker states in terms of federal subsidies.

First, you're using the term "subsidies" inappropriately. But.

We've had this discussion. Just because "Slate" or "Mother Jones" says it doesn't make it so. The outcome of any such calculation is highly subjective easily manipulated so as to manipulate the thinking of the readership.

So, do you allocate it on population? On area? On some combination? What do you consider taxes "paid in"? Is it net of EITC? Is it per capita? What do you consider amounts paid back to the state ("subsidies" in your terminology)? Is that everything? How are unfunded mandates handled? Are loans between governmental entities properly handled? What happens in the case of a state that borrows more than it can repay and subsequently calls on federal government to bail it out (as will happen before it is all over)?

As you can see this is a complicated topic that can be affected by many variables, each of which can be material and all of which combined can literally make the figures mean anything the author might want them to.

"So that we're on the same page", I believe CA, IL, NY, and a couple other liberal states are among the biggest, most outrageous takers out of the 50 states. But I have a decent understanding of economics and finance.
