New treatment It is used when people have stubborn Clostridium difficile infection in their bowels.
Just a testimonial about the efficacy of fecal implants for treatment of C. diff. My 100 year old father-in-law picked this up in the hospital as a result of antibiotics to treat pneumonia. Apparently the antibiotics kill the "good" bacteria leaving only the bad stuff. After nearly 6 months of diarrhea and numerous trips to the hospital, finally a contagious diseases expert suggested the fecal implant. My wife was the donor and it immediately solved the problem. Of course stupid Medicare would not cover the procedure since it is relatively new, even though the success rate in curing C. diff. is 93% (go figure...I guess they would rather pay for continuous hospital stays). The doctor had to disguise the procedure as a "colonoscopy" since the procedure is very similar with the exception that fecal matter is deposited along the colon.

If you know anyone suffering from C. diff. they should definitely consider a fecal implant.
