Trentino is all Austrian-Hungarian Reich German until 1920 or so. Dual language area for centuries and certainly not with a built in understanding of the many South Italian dialects. So called standard Italian as it was and still is spoken around Florence - and thus pioneered by Dante if I am not mistaken - often is quite different from those 6-7 local dialects still spoken around in Italy. Also recently revived a lot, since it has become a macho thing among the manly men to stick to their local dialect :)
