I did not look up the actuals to confirm them but I'll take your word for it. However, I am in the S&P in my 401K at work and feel good about that. Two years ago when I bought Intel at 59, 56 and 50, I remember thinking it would be great if my company's 401K allowed an element of self-directed investments.

Because had I been in Intel in my 401K at the same basis as my outside investment I'd be up well over 100% in two years and the S&P is well behind that.

btw, did you assume that everyone on this thread bought on December 19th of 96 and sold today? Long term investors and shorter term types don't speak the same lanuage. I'm interested in what you've been in for the last several years, S&P index funds perhaps?
