Brumar,
BUT it does ruin the fantasy that modern civilization can eliminate fossil fuels.
Elimination of fossil fuels isn't necessary, nor is it viable. All we need to do is figure out how to reduce the demand thereof.

For example, a liberal utopia could ban the use of fossil fuels for anything other than transportation and heating. Such a utopia would use a vast network of solar and wind farms to generate and store electricity for 24/7 use.

Why can't we do it now? Because:

a) Solar and wind farms still cannot generate as much energy as coal or natural gas power plants. You would have to build a TON of PV panels and windmills to match the output.

b) It's still tough to store huge amps of electricity for later use. Battery technology still needs to advance by an order of magnitude.

c) Fossil fuels are still relatively cheap, even before the recent drop in oil prices. It's too tempting to refrain from simply burning the stuff and meeting your energy needs that way.
