Thirty-odd years ago I read about something that happened in a Houston(?) hospital. A teen cancer patient undergoing chemo sucked zinc gluconate tablets. The treating doctors noticed he didn't get colds, precursor to pneumonia, big troubles for those already weakened. They put out a news release suggesting this was a proper subject for further formal study.

I began sucking those tabs if I suspected a cold coming on to good result. Problem was they tasted AWFUL! Taste receptors wouldn't work for a day after the last tab.

Anyway, I suspect that was the genesis for Cold-Eze and similar products.
