So far I've had no professional help with retirement / estate planning

In my view the 2 are largely separate. Several years ago we hired an estate lawyer to create several trusts which hopefully will help our heirs. I view that as largely distinct from what we do with our money before the end. I manage our money, because I don't believe that a "professional" can do enough better to justify their fees.
