This is a post from an IS manager who went to the show as a sales prospect. Feel free to forward this if you choose to do so.
"CopyTele had a very nice booth and nice people. The technology at best could be classified as "emerging", but not without it's merits. Currently, this is not a production run device that is available for any mass use or sale at this time. No specific information was given as to US pricing, distributor, availability. The screen was unique, but rather small and available in grey scale only. I did not see any display of color, or even anything comercially viable in the United States.
I did however, use a simultaneous handwriting feature over the world wide web that will suit my companies needs, that was made by a company out of San Jose, CA. The Magicom device, although unique and interesting, does not appear to be in wide spread use anywhere. No reference sales were disclosed. No estimate of units in the field. If the company is "pursuing the US market" as one poster wrote on this board, CopyTele did not give indication to that.
From a CIO stance, there is no justification anywhere that would warrant the purchase of the devices at the rumored price. However, if CopyTele can produce a similiar screen with color on a larger scale, than this may be a viable technology. I was not sure of the exact purpose of CopyTele's visit to Comdex, as they only seemed to be displaying a technology, not trying to sell it. The display reminded me of a concept car at the auto show, nice to look at, but not available in the near future.
I was going to inquire about the shipment of units, but felt it would not be worth the aggrevation. The company, in my eyes, is only a small developmental enterprise that appears to be struggling to bring their labors to fruition. Several competing technologies were also displayed at the show (Advanced PDA type devices) that aesthetically looked superior. Some ran Windows CE or Windows 95 and had nice color displays. The product that caught my eye would have been an offering from Fujitsu Labs. Very nice PDA that runs has the same features as CopyTele's, except the handwriting and the voicemail. The Fujitsu offering did posses other features that the Magicom did not, such as an electronic audio storage format and 48 MB of ram. " |
