You'd lose that bet. No, I am not a 9/11 truther. I am not really into conspiracy theories. This one, though has quite a bit of support by people who have no apparent reason to fan the flames of craziness. Like the Russian government under Yeltsin. Or Yitzak Shamir.

Here is a fun fact. Remember when the USS Vicennes shot down that Iranian airliner? Apparently their equipment confused the airliner with a F14 which took off from a nearby runway at the same time. An F14 has a mean time before failure measured in 10s of hours of flight time. Not only that, it isn't like you could park one at the end of a runway and throw a tarp over it. Unless the engines were spooled up on a regular basis, the bearings would flat spot and then explosively disassemble when you did get around to firing them up. What that means is they needed a constant flow of replacement parts and maintenance by trained technicians. Now true, we did sell the F14 to a few other countries including Iran under the Shah, but except for Israel we did the maintenance. The only source was us or the Israelis. While I suppose it is conceivable that the Iranians could figure out how to do the maintenance by trial and error, where did they get the parts? It isn't like you could go to the nearby ArmsRus to get parts.

So how was a F14 flying some 9 years after the revolution? Sure, I suppose the Israelis could have been supplying the Iranians without our knowledge. After all, they did shoot up the USS Liberty, presumably without our permission. But would they? What would have been their motivation?
