Let us know how he's doing a month or two from now.

Here's my true life story. My dad got AOL and an ISP on his new computer a year or so ago. After awhile he was only using AOL because he couldn't get on through the ISP. Just one of those garden variety things where the configuration of something somewhere was changed in the computer and suddenly the browser couldn't find the right dial up file or the modem couldn't talk to the ISP anymore. It only took me a few minutes to fix it for him, but that's because this has happened to me a half dozen times in the past two years. I happen to think spending an hour or two searching through various settings and configurations looking for what has inadvertantly changed or moved or been deleted is as much fun as a video game. But that's just me -- and a very small percentage of the rest of the population.

Another true life story: We have an old, underpowered laptop at my office that is prone to crashing at inopportune times. We've pulled a lot of the software off in an effort to remove the conflict and create a serviceable machine for basic word processing and e-mails. The thing that has saved me numerous times when I've been the one stuck trying to use this machine was simply pulling out one of those ubiquitous AOL disks and reloading the software. It works every time. I can even find a local access number right away through their 800 number option built right into the sign on screen. Try that from a strange city with your ISP.
