1 Million DVD Unit Mark Passed by Nimbus Cd International; DVD Replication Business Growing at Virginia-based Company
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 1997--Nimbus CD International, Inc. (NASDAQ: NMBS), announced today that it has surpassed the 1 million unit mark in the replication of DVD products. A combined total of more than 1.1 million commercial DVD-Video and DVD-ROM discs have been manufactured by the Company since the launch in April.
Lyndon J. Faulkner, Chairman and CEO of Nimbus said, "The interest and demand for DVDs, both ROM and video, is clearly increasing at a healthy rate. We've filled more than 400 customer orders with production runs of various sizes. As an independent manufacturer, we are very pleased to have already surpassed this important production benchmark. It is a positive barometer, we feel, of the long-term opportunities for this business. This milestone has a lot to do with our very early commitment to make DVD replication capability a top priority."
To date, as reported by Video Scan (week ended Dec. 7), total DVD movie sales to consumers has reached 1 million discs.
Faulkner added, "The majority of work we've done to date is DVD-Video since players have been available and have only been marketed nationally since September. We anticipate significant growth in our DVD-ROM business, as the installed base of drives begins to migrate from CD-ROM to DVD-ROM. Hardware has just begun to ship and we're seeing a lot of early interest from both major software developers and OEMs."
Nimbus also announced today, in a separate release, that is has ordered DVD production equipment for Europe. This investment will add 4-5 million units of DVD disc capacity annually to Nimbus' existing 12 million DVD annual capacity in the U.S. |
