>> Taxpayers check in, but they can never check out.

I used to have a client who was involved in a number of shady business ventures, but ALWAYS paid his taxes, at least after he came to me. Because he absolutely feared the IRS. One time he went to a bank complaining because his 1099 was off, only cents. I told him, "Forget it." But he wouldn't let it go. So he went to the bank, they told him to come back the next day and they'd have it fixed. What he didn't realize was that by "fixed" they meant they would send IRS a second one that indicated "corrected."

He flipped out. When he brought them to my office, he wanted me to put both of them in his return, which I figured would cost him $10,000. He did not care. I finally convinced him it would all be fine, but I never met such a nervous taxpayer. His goal in life was to minimize the number of documents at IRS with his SSN on them. The entire time I did his taxes I have no doubt he paid at least what was due. But there was something in that man's past that he thought IRS could get him for. I don't know what it was.

We called him the "Legbreaker." Has to be long gone by now.

People do not like it when their tax stuff is screwed up, even just a little...
