The woman next to me in choir was sneezing and hacking last night and she kept leaning over to tell me jokes. I tried not to breathe but that's really hard when you're singing. I have a terrible fear of having coughing fits during performances. I keep packages of Altoids and Hall's in my folder and a thing of kleenex and I put water under my chair.
But it happens. One Messiah a few years ago, the woman next to me was doing the most incredibly gorgeous "He Shall Feed His Flock" and I started to cough, not a clear your throat once thing but a real tickle that would not quit. It is possible not to cough, but I believe it can lead to death. THe tears poured down my cheeks with the effort. Luckily everyone thought I was just a caring and deeply sensitive musician, or maybe they thought I was grieving because I didn't get to do the solo, but they thought I was crying. People kept passing me kleenex. I held my breath for 10 minutes, I swear, but damn it, I managed to contain myself to a few choking gasps. Unfortunately, I also was incapable of singing the rest of the performance. I just mouthed the words. I really felt bad getting paid for that one. On the other hand, it was really the hardest I ever worked.
