(Nasdaq: VYTL - news), a facilities-based provider of national and international long-distance telecommunications services, announced today that it has been granted a Class 4 license to own and operate infrastructure and facilities in designated geographic areas within Germany and a Class 3 license to provide unrestricted public telecommunications services throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. The licenses, issued by the Federal Ministry for Post and Telecommunications, will become effective on January 1, 1998.

''We expect to aggressively compete in marketing Viatel's offerings to our target customer groups in business centers through the Republic, as a key part of our European strategy.''
