I find it very strange you would pose such a question. Even without knowing the hardware and software configuration, it is implicit that the State Department IT people OUGHT to be able to do a better job of securing an email server than some unknown IT company in NY. If we can't make that statement outright, the country is in pretty serious trouble.

Securing servers that are connected to the Internet is complicated work that is ongoing on almost a daily basis. Email is one of the more harder software services to secure on any network. I don't think anyone who knows about networked systems would suggest that a home server could be reliably secured without very large expenditures.

Apparently, they didn't even bother to put in new hardware and software, which not only suggests but practically guarantees vulnerability. And you are talking about one of the most valuable hacking targets in the world.

It was stupid. No one with knowledge of this subject would argue otherwise. Just D-U-M-B dumb. And very high risk.

We really cannot have someone like this as president after eight years of Obama.
