You are right to say that if Java becomes big, the processor won't matter. However, the lowest cost (for a given performance level) processor is:

Intel!

And if you think Java apps don't need POWER, what's going to be doing all the funky multimedia content? Citrix style servers? I think not. Java does offer OS independence, but I think Intel-based architectures are the least cost architecture. It has a huge economy of scale that IBM, Oracle, or anyone will not be able to match.
