Hi Again, John: Unfortunately, I don't have any real news to offer but to tell you that Mr. Chubb very kindly returned a phone call I made to the co after failing in my bids to talk to their IR guy. Allow me this, he is one gentle, decent, obviously intelligent, and IMO ethical man. He is also disarmingly pleasant and patient.

He indicated he could not explain the recent stock activity other than to say there is no fundamental change going on in the company. Everything on the scientific end is going according to plan and reiterated that all 97 goals were met in that area.. He doesn't know what Bayer will elect to do but that the co's data forwarded to them from the studies was very impressive.

I brought up the issue of NMP22's relative disappointment (in terms of revenue). I think it would be fair to say in my reading of his response is that management is frustrated and disappointed and wasn't quite prepared for the (lack of) speed of the medical community in embracing this technology. [I think you might be right with regards to another disappointing qtr]. I also brought up the issue of NMP22 as a screening tool. They are working on that but data probably won't be ready until 1999 - there are simply too many other priorities and projects on the plate for 1998 as you are aware.

As far as the recent trading from my perspective: it is somewhat unnerving. The more serious money is selling if T/S is telling me anything. Indeed, currently Lvl II is showing no support. The houses that have been recommending this stock have been nowhere in sight for the most part. When will they decide that this stock is cheap? - and I use that term advisedly. With your insight I think you're better equipped to answer that than me. I cave. Will this stock eventually return my unrequited love? I almost hate to admit this John, but we will eventually be buying even more. I keep telling myself - biotech is where one will want to be in the coming years.

Regards, Bill
