Federal Reserve No Longer 'Patient' On Interest Rates

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will no longer remain “patient” on interest rates, according to the central bank’s monetary policy statement."The Committee anticipates that it will be appropriate to raise the target range for the federal funds rate when it has seen further improvement in the labor market and is reasonably confident that inflation will move back to its 2 percent objective over the medium term," the statement said.

Although the Fed will no longer remain "patient" on interest rates, they said it is unlikely they will raise rates at the April meeting.

Although the central bank is preparing markets for an eventual rate hike, the committee appears to be less optimistic regarding the currenty economic recovery. In the statement they acknowledge that the economic growth has "moderated somewhat. The committee also acknowledged that "export growth has weakened."

However, the central bank remains firm that although inflation remains low, longer-term expectations remain stable. The statement adds, "The Committee expects inflation to rise gradually toward 2 percent over the medium term as the labor market improves further and the transitory effects of lower energy pricesprice declines and other factors dissipate."
