I've been reading this thread for a long time. I have to say some of what I believe now. :)

As we all know. The OS platform of the past to win the race, won NOT because of it's superiority, but because development was done on that platform. For example... Why wouldn't my office purchase Solaris when NT 4.0 has so many problems comparitively? It cant scale the same. The machines aren't as fast yet.. Even on the same machines UNIX's stability and power is far greater than NT's. It's simple why microsoft has won in the past, and to a certain extent in the present. And it's a one-two punch.

1. Development/compatibility. I can buy the client server version of the Accounting system my company uses for NT. The workstation version was developed on PCs so this is the logical progression. I certainly dont want to buy into a OS that will render most of my server based applications unusable, so I will put up with a lesser NOS so I can have the programs I need. My people are already trained Etc etc etc...

2. Marketing. Everyone knows the great trumpets that have been blown over NT. And windows is a houshold name. If you say 'windows' people might not even think of panes of glass half the time. :) They have 'educated' the public about their product and taken the market.

Too bad SUN can never compete against this momentum. Wait a minute. They are, aren't they? I have one word:

JAVA!

So SUN is gonna forge a strategic allience with INTEL. This means they are admitting that they cannot compete in the hardware arena? No one would buy a sparc machine even if it was faster because there wouldn't be the choice to run NT right?? Hmmm I don't think so. Guess what levels the playing field.

JAVA!

Where will applications be developed now for the sake of compatibility?

JAVA!

What machines will this new breed of programs run on?? Any machine. Now think about buying that sparc machine. Make a little more sence? But of course its up to you. You could run your server off a fast 486 for your 5 computer network, or off a 100 processor SUN box for your 5000 station LAN/WAN. The internet will become the network of the future. Why do we need to even still think LAN/WAN? It's just NETWORK now. And indeed the network is becomming the computer right before our eyes. Perhaps English is becomming the universal human language of the NETWORK... But what is fast becomming the computer's universal language??? Simple.

JAVA!

Think about it a little more, and ask yourself this question:
Why would I develop software for the masses in any other flavor than JAVA?? Well for the time being it's like DOS -> Windows... sure theres still DOS software written. A little. But DOS is history. I'd like to put forth this as our next progression: Not DOS->Windows->NT.. not DOS->Windows->Solaris.. not even DOS->Windows->Java. It's going to be DOS->Windows->NETWORK. Can't you all see this happening right before your eyes??? So SUNS vision might be just a little more than a catchy slogan (The Network is the Computer). Guess what is gonna tie this all together???

JAVA!

On the point of marketing. I only have one comment (bet you are glad :) Can you remember the recent time that the word JAVA meant coffee?

SUN bashers: OPEN YOUR EYES!!! Theres no time to argue whether or not the train is gonna work, or leave on time. This train has already left the station.

The world of computers/technology/communication is changing before our eyes. In a way that will be remembered as *AS IMPORTANT as the advent of radio and television*.

I think its a great time to be alive.

I am betting my money on SUN Microsystems.

Excitedly,
