The "cherry" in the deal is RPS which will allow FedEx to compete aggressively with UPS. Note that UPS is having problems with its unions. So is RPS. FedEx is subject to a different, less-onerous set of labor laws, which is why the two will remain separate. The acquisition of RPS may have a negative impact on FDX's '98 EPS. PTB
