Paul, re:"thechipmerchant.com"
You say, These are not Intel's distributors.

Thats my point, the fact that thechipmerchant.com can be selling intel
cpu's for less than the quantity 10,000 price means that the big guys
-- Wyle, Anthem etc. -- are paying a lot less than Intel's
published prices
for their Intel CPU's.

My point is, that the last guidance given by Intel on pricing, as
reported in that Infoworld article on November 13
infoworld.com
has apparently been superceded with no announcement from Intel. The
new prices are revealed in
techweb.cmp.com

All prices quantity 10000 or larger (quantity 1000 prices about $10 higher)
INFOWORLD 11/13 TECHWEB 12/16
PRODUCT(cur.price) Jan1 price Jan1 price
------------------- --------------------- ------------------------
P2-233 ($395) "less than $300" $263 (-33%)
P2-266 ($520) no reduction until 2/1 no reduction until 2/1
...BUT, then why have
retail prices
dropped to $471 already
MMX233 ($300, q1000) no announcement $188 (-38%)

The key differences:
1. P2-233 at $263 is a lot less than $300.
2. P2-266 will be reduced January 1 and not February 1,
otherwise the chip could not be sold for $471 already.
3. MMX233 price reduction of 38%
