In legal education, most adjunct professors are distinguished full time practitioners who donate their time (or get paid little for it) to teach the subject in which they are proficient. I think the same is true in medicine. Most adjunct professors teach nuts and bolts subjects, not the highly theoretical stuff. And they rarely teach the core subjects.
