R F, I'm wary of another decline back to the mid-30s or lower from this point, but will probably just continue to hang in with WMT.

DLJ Securities said in its Dec. 25 retail report: "Wal-Mart has
been running slightly below plan month to date, but still feels comfortable about its overall position."

Goldman Sachs on Dec. 17 said:

Broadlines Retailers
George Strachan (212) 902-6708

Federated Department Stores (FD) $44.81
EPS (FY Jan): 1998E $2.55, 1999E $2.95 - Recommended List

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (WMT) $40.75
EPS (FY Jan): 1998E $1.56, 1999E $1.75 - Market Outperformer

* Sales are typically running below or at the low end of plan for most major retailers at mid-December, but we expect a strong finale with this year's extra pre-Christmas shopping day and late Chanukah.
