To be fair, the anti-science people are always with us. For about a decade starting in the late 1960s there was a significant anti-science contingent in the Democratic party. Granted, the 1980s ushered in the technocrats who tended to side with the Democrats over the Republicans and marginalized the anti-science Democrats, but it did happen.
