It's not so complicated. Combine neo-Marxist theories of the third world with ignorance, arrogance and pique when the world refuses to go along with his schemes, and you get what passes for Obama's "policy". If you can even call it that.

Let's recall Obama's first attempt to put "daylight" between the US and Israel, the one Garfinkle says put the Palestinians into a "high corner" in the negotiations. Obama not only insisted on a total freeze on settlement building, he explicitly called Jerusalem a settlement for the first time ever by an American administration. This was in line with his leftist theories, but it was an obvious disaster in dealing with both Israel and the Palestinians.

Insisting on a settlement freeze only outside of the main settlement blocs would have been a wedge issue in Israel; Obama could have gotten the Israeli left on his side. By including not only the settlement blocs, but Jerusalem as well, in his demands, Obama created wall-to-wall consensus inside Israel. As for the Palestinians, of course they couldn't be less pro-Palestinian than Obama, so they indeed were boxed into their "high corner". Abbas at one point compared it to being left sitting on a tree branch without a ladder.

Not that peace talks would have gone anywhere if Obama had left them alone. Abbas couldn't sign anything if he wanted to. But Obama ensured their instant failure.
