Yeah, something has to change. And not just how planes are flown. MDs in Germany need to know that if your patient is sick and should not be working [flying], then you need to follow up and make sure the patient he didn't fly that day.
Coulda shoulda woulda. What was unimaginable before, even in a post-9/11 world, is now a reality.

So now we say, "Well that copilot should never have been allowed to fly a jumbo jet in the first place!"

But what exactly was that copilot suffering from, and how could anyone have known in advance what he was planning to do?

I don't think we'll ever get definitive answers to these questions. Might as well take solace in the fact that flying is still one of the safest ways to travel, like that "dictator" i-node already pointed out.
