This Q, I expect to be record Zip sales volume. With all of the price cuts, who wouldn't? But when 1st Q 1998 numbers are reported, Zip and overall revenues will be down dramatically, worse than last year's decrease.

"This is the Christmas season!" some here may yell. "You can't compare the Christmas Season with 1st Q numbers!"

But wait--this shouldn't happen with a device that's supposed to replace the 1.44 floppy. We should be seeing Zip sales double month after month in order to catch up with the 95% of new computers being sold WITHOUT ZIPS, and installed base of computers WITHOUT ZIPS. Instead, what we are seeing is the maturation process of a popular peripheral. But not a replacement for the floppy. Instead, what it has replaced and popularized are old Syquest 44MB-88MB-200MB drives.

Now it seems that Iomaniacs cast their gaze toward the upcoming 40MB Vapor! mini-drive for salvation. This is a device in which no solid OEM's have been announced, and no concrete support OF ANY KIND has been demonstrated. Instead, all we have are words of "Support" from other corporations.

There is a long way from "Support" to "Signing on the dotted line."

Besides, the 40MB Vapor! drive will reportedly sell for $200. A 1 Gig SparQ drive also sells for this amount. The typical desktop user will not go for the Vapor! option as a desktop replacement for anything.
