We've been doing this trip for several years. We like to leave in the Spring, the only worry is the darned tornados mid-country (they just had an outbreak of them).

There are 4 campgrounds we use that I think are notable:

KOA - Lake Eufaula/Checotah, OK

koa.com

KOA - Marion , AR (West Memphis)

Amelia Family Campground (Amelia Courthouse, VA) - we are friends with the Hutchinson family & they hold one heck of a Bluegrass festival! They are very gracious hosts and have a fantastic wooded campground. The patriarch, John Hutchinson, passed away last summer.

Shenandoah Acres Family Campground - this is a big lake & campground near Stuarts Draft, VA that we went to as kids back in the 50's & 60's. It closed down and has been reopened/totally redone by a friend, Garland Eustler, who we met through Bluegrass music connections (a great guy). This will be our "home base" for the trip

We will be camping lots of other places, but those will be for Bluegrass festivals where we set up the rig and go listen to music and do some picking. These aren't really destinations for camping, rather a spot to park and dry camp.

Will try to post an occasional update!
