The winter road tries to take advantage of as many large lakes as possible and is joined by overland portages between the lakes. Lakes have alot thicker and better ice then rivers so you avoid places where water flows. If you have to go over rivers you usually scrape them clear of snow to let the cold penetrate more and some river crossing (in other areas) get flooded to build up the ice.
So the winter road is mostly over lakes and the portages between lakes.
its going down to minus 28 tonight, so the ice is thickening, locally the lakes have a foot or more of ice.
