Brumar,
The fact that convicted murderers have been set free to kill again is a powerful argument for the death penalty to prevent that.
The fact that innocent people have been convicted to die is a powerful argument against the death penalty.

Personally I don't see any reason why we should keep the death penalty around. If the penalty cannot be administered swiftly and quietly (so that the convict doesn't become a Cause célèbre), then we shouldn't even bother.

And in this day and age, neither is possible. Just lock 'em up, throw away the key, and let them die of natural causes. Though that's more expensive than just killing them quickly, it's less expensive than keeping them on death row and trying and retrying them because "we really want to be sure."
