I guess I'm the only one here who followed it, but Justified ended its six year run a couple nights ago. For a series with notably few lows, it ended on a great high. The whole series had been leading up to one confrontation (Raylan vs Boyd with a lot of Ava thrown into the mix) and instead of ending on what everyone thought was to be the inevitable climax, it ended so much better. A totally satisfying series. It may not have been as high profile as many of the other series, but it was stellar. Great characters, great plotting and the dialogue was golden. It may not have been written by Elmore Leonard, but it was true to Elmore Leonard. There were so many different bad guys (and girls too) but they were all a different kind of bad, and they all could express their evil so cogently. None of them were a match for Raylan, however, even while he was undergoing his own moral struggles. I think it will make a great binge watch when all of the seasons are available. The last line reminded me of the crowd of people who have been in the Kitchen all these years: We dug coal together.
It's out of the theaters and not yet available on dvd or streaming, but when it is, I highly recommend an Argentinian film called Wild Tales. (Not to be mistaken with Graham Nash's film of the same name.) It's the most entertaining film I've seen in years.
Finally, I have given up all my premium channels. The only thing I miss from HBO is VEEP, and there were a lot of showtime series I enjoyed but I decided I was just going to have to live without them. I dropped Shameless right in mid-season and I'm going to miss Nurse Jackie and Masters of Sex, but there's too much else going on. Just not watching that much teevee. The only things I'm watching now are Mad Men (and can't help but wonder where everything is going), Louie, and looking forward to Amy Schumer starting again next week. |
