"Beyond the Tank," a Shark Tank spinoff, premiers on May 1

'Beyond the Tank': 5 reasons to anticipate the 'Shark Tank' spinoff

Shark Tank is a cultural phenomenon that’s becoming a staple of our society. “For that reason, I’m out” might just be the new “Can I get fries with that?” Maybe.

There’s no denying the success of the show that has helped many entrepreneurs while its contestants and judges made over $45 million in deals. Now the executive producers of Shark Tank are giving us a three-week companion series, Beyond the Tank, that shows what happens after entrepreneurs make a deal with the Sharks. Here are five reasons to look forward to the show:

1. The intensity! The drama! (Is that two reasons?)

Of course, this is what we are waiting to see. We get plenty of it on Shark Tank, beautifully captured by the show’s production and editorial team. What will we get on Beyond the Tank? What happens when the entrepreneur has to make a tough decision? What if a Shark and the entrepreneur disagree on how operations are handled? What if a company is not doing as well as the Shark wants? The Sharks’ actual money is really on the line now, so this will be interesting to check out.

2. Can the entrepreneurs handle the pressure?

You just landed a deal with the Sharks. Congratulations! Now let’s see how you handle the immediate jump in demand, web orders, deadlines, notoriety, and all of the other stuff that comes with the agreement. It will be fascinating to watch how entrepreneurs handle the transition after landing a deal.

3. Out of the chair and into the fire

The synopsis for the first episode of Beyond the Tank states, “Robert Herjavec rolls up his sleeves to help guide San Diego, CA, entrepreneurs Evan Melsohn and Nick Morton …” It looks like sleeves will be rolled! We usually see the Sharks sitting in those nice chairs, with a suit and tie or dress, engaging in a verbal battle royale with the entrepreneurs and each other. Now Beyond the Tank will give us a chance to see them in action, in the heat of the (business) moment.

4. Learn, baby, learn!

A great thing about Shark Tank is that aspiring entrepreneurs (and those who don’t aspire to be entrepreneurs) can learn a lot about the financial challenges of running a company. Now that we get a chance to go deeper into the operations of startups, the Beyond the Tank audience will get a chance to learn more about the nitty-gritty of business wheeling and dealing.

5. How did those who didn’t get a deal do?

From the synopsis of the first episode, we already know that Beyond the Tank will at least feature one entrepreneur who did not get a deal. How did the entrepreneur bounce back? Is there really business life after a Shark Tank rejection?

Beyond the Tank premieres on Friday, May 1, at 9 p.m. on ABC.
