Here's a topic: Handling waste water in an RV

This is one of the less appreciated but necessary tasks. I thought those of us who deal with this could share tips & tricks. Here's a start:

First you will notice the clear plastic elbow just after the dump valves. This is helpful when flushing the tanks after the contents of the black & gray tanks have been dumped. Always dump the black water (sewage) tank first. Once the contents have dumped, I flush the toilet for 5 minutes while the valve is still open to help thoroughly clean out the tank. Watch the clear plastic elbow, when the clear water starts flowing, close the valve to the black water tank.

Now open the valve to the gray water tank. Once the contents are dumped, run water in the kitchen & bathroom sinks for 5 minutes to thoroughly clean out the gray water tank. Again, watch the clear plastic elbow, and when the water starts flowing clear, close the valve.

The last step is to add treatment to both tanks to control odors and help break down waste (in black water tank) between tank dumps. The following photo shows the Walex products I have used for years. The one on the left is for the gray water tank. I put the tablet in the drain of the kitchen sink and run about 1 1/2 gallons of water to dissolve it. The one on the right is a premeasured pouch for treating the black water tank. Just flush it down the toilet with about 1 1/2 gallons of water. That's what I do. In fact, I just did it!
