Atlanta City Council approves sustainability measure

Owners of commercial buildings in Atlanta will be required to keep track of the electricity and water they use and report the data under an sustainability ordinance approved unanimously by the city council.

The ordinance, developed by Mayor Kasim Reed’s Office of Sustainability, aims to reduce commercial energy consumption in Atlanta by 20 percent by 2030 and create more than 1,000 jobs annually during the first few years it’s in effect.

“The city of Atlanta and stakeholders are fully invested in making Atlanta a top-tier city for sustainability,” Reed said after Monday night’s council vote. “This is the right step for the city ... and shows our leadership on the national stage.”............................................
