Yes, there are so many things people should be aware of in those kinds of situations...
If you hear someone inside your house and can't actually find them, don't try to look for them after you make phone contact with the police, the police will enter your home and may think you're the burglar, especially if you're walking around with a weapon of any sort in your hand, the police might see you through the window as they surround the house and possibly think you're the bad guy with a gun and shoot you instead, that has happened many times... only if you have a dead aim on the burglar should you fire, and keep firing until he falls dead... and if you fire and kill or disable the burglar after you already phoned the police, then phone them back and tell them you shot the burglar and he's on the floor conscious or unconscious... personally, I would make sure the burglar is dead...
Also, if you phone the police in a house burglary, don't say "I would like to report a burglary." That would make them think the burglar is already gone and the danger has already passed... the very first thing you say is "Burglary in progress," tell them you're the home owner, and then give the address...
And so on...
