For example, this is post # 131 of this thread. If any previous posts on this thread were to be deleted, this number (131) would change, but the unique permalink SI number of this post - 3003748 - would not. It will always remain:

If this post were to be removed, the result you would get would be identical to that which you get when you try to access this one:

However, all this does not mean that there was really a total of 3003748 posts that have been made on SI at the moment I posted. Many have been removed, and therefore Scott is also correct.

Post Message 3000000 is not in fact the 3 millionth one made on SI.

That's how I understand it.
