Ken, I used to have an XP computer with a 2nd HD in it. Instead of making a drive image I cloned the system to that 2nd HD. Then I was able to boot from either HD by getting into BIOS at startup.

Has the advantage that you KNOW whether the clone works by using it once after making it.
If one drive fails, just boot from the other.

You start by installing the new HD into the tower. Might have to buy a serial cable, too. Once it's installed the PC should recognize the HD. after that you may want to partition it and then clone the system from C: to it using your favorite imaging software [Acronis, Macrium, EaseUS etc]
