While bubbles and volatility are not unique to our present circumstances, it was very much reduced before we turned our financial system into a casino. The financial system is supposed to be a service, not an end unto itself.

Unregulated, the system becomes unstable and is prone to crashes which wipes out the middle class every decade or two. You can't run a developed, technological economy that way.
