Actually, as CJ pointed out to me a month or so ago, correctly, almost every state now substantially restricts the amount of sales tax revenue raised from the poor. There is no sales tax paid in many, even most, places, on essential items like groceries and rent. This hasn't always been the case, but most states have now enacted statutes to prevent the taxation of the poor.

In addition, of course, the poor receive the massive refundable Earned Income Tax Credit which provides BILLIONS in refunds to people who didn't pay taxes in in the first place.

These are people who, in significant part, supported by the rest of us who actually pay our taxes and theirs, as well as the cost of giving them free shit.

It is fairly pathetic, if the truth is known.
