Solaris and Intel are brands. The significance of the announcement is that the Merced will have a 64 bit operating system waiting for it while Microsoft plays catch-up with its 32 bit offering. That's going to be a long game for Microsoft considering they have been travelling at 200 MPH down a deadend street which is about to end. There's two approaches: modular, secure, distributed software with on-demand functionality and simple, centralized management; or, localized, one-size-fits-all on software for a stand-alone desktop. Guess what? The former is just starting to gel and Microsoft doesn't have it. They have the latter. With the help of Sun, Novell, Netscape and Oracle, IBM is going to rattle Microsoft's cage like it has never been rattled before. The fireworks start next quarter.
