Alex, I don't see a conversation going anywhere on this one. One quick thought, however, just to enter a bit of a rejoinder. On your point in which you couple right wing politics with religion, there's more than sufficient evidence to uncouple the two. Much religious effort provides aid to the poor, creates strong social movements for progressive change, has powerful arguments about the globalization of poverty, and so on. So it's not religion per se that couples with bigotry, it's particular forms of religious expression. The senator in that article is a good example of much of this.
